Ministry of Water and Irrigation signed Management and Operation Contract for Water and Wastewater Management in the Southern Governorates

Minister of Water and Irrigation, Eng. Mohammad Najjar, the Secretary General of the Water Authority of Jordan Eng. Bashar Al-Bataineh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aqaba Water Company, Mahmoud Jarad Al-Naimat, and the General Director of Aqaba Water Company, Eng. Khaled Al-Obaidyn signed agreements of the management and operation contract for Water and Wastewater of Ma'an, Karak and Tafelih Governorates in the presence of the Director of the Office of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Sherry Carlin and the Director of the Water and Environment Office at the US Agency Andrew McKim, representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Nobuhiro Kawatani, and Director of Karak Water Directorate Eng. Samer Al-Maaytah, Director of Ma'an Water Directorate Eng. Mohammad Al-Asoufi, and Director of Tafila Water Directorate Eng. Mustafa Zanoun), in addition to Director of the Utilities Performance Monitoring Unit, Dr. Ahmed Al Azzam and a number of water sector officials. Agreements were signed to manage and operate water and wastewater in the southern governorates by the Aqaba Water Company, starting from the beginning of the year 2022 , where water of Ma'an governorate will be managed and operated by the beginning of 2022, while water of Karak and Tafelih will be managed and operated by the beginning of April 2022. The Minister of Water and Irrigation indicated that the efforts of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation/the Water Authority of Jordan are paid to support the Aqaba Water Company to make a qualitative leap and to improve water and wastewater services provided to citizens in the southern governorates, as well as to develop services, to raise the efficiency of water supply, to reduce water losses and to reduce energy costs as well. He added that this the challenge we have to address in order to pick fruits of efforts tackled by Aqaba Water Company to manage water in the southern governorates which will reflect positively on services provided to citizens.

The Minister appreciated the support paid by friendly countries and donors around the world, especially the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the German Investment and Development Bank (KfW), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Japan

Cooperation Agency (ICA) for their continuous support for the water sector, which will contribute to confront various challenges and w improve the level of services submitted.

For his part, the Secretary General of the Water Authority of Jordan, Eng. Basha Bataineh, stated that the goal of this agreement is to improve the level of services provided to citizens, to raise the efficiency of supply, to reduce water losses, and to work on the securement of new water resources and to provide the various regions with a good level of water and wastewater services. Eng. Bataineh added that the reduction of water loss will be reflected in providing and securing additional quantities of water for different regions, as well as finding alternative resources of energy to reduce the energy bill and to implement the projects according to the best modern levels in line with the strategy of the Water Authority of Jordan, in addition to rehabilitating water and sewage networks, developing and improving the performance level of employees and workers to shorten time and effort. and to provide a high level service as a result.

The Secretary General mentioned that the Water Authority will provide the necessary support for the success of this experiment in order to achieve the aspirations of the water sector. He also said that WAJ will also carry out performance control through the Utilities Performance Monitoring Unit (UPMU) in order to secure work progress in accordance to the plans set, and to follow-up work implementation in accordance to the time frame defined. Eng. Bashar said that Aqaba Water Company will start the management of Ma'an Water Directorate by the beginning of next year 2022, while it will start implementing the management contract in Karak and Tafelih Water Directorates by the beginning of April 2022.
