Red Sea – Dead Sea Canal Project (RSDSC)

 

Background

 

The Trilateral Economic Committee of Jordan, Israel and the USA provided the concept for the integrated development of the Jordan Rift valley for the purpose of promoting peace and the economic development of both Israel and Jordan.  The Joint Steering commissioned the Harza JRV Group who completed phase I of committee (RSDSC) studies in 1996 and authorized the Master Plan that identified potential for development. 

 

 

Objectives

 

·      Provision of sustainable source of fresh water to Jordan, Israel and Palestinian Authority.

·        Stimulate economic development in the Jordan Rift Valley

·        Promote the Peace Process

·        Stabilize the level of the Dead Sea

·      Provide additional water to mitigate environmental damages.

 

 

Project Description

 

RSDSC will be located in the portion of The Jordan Rift Valley between the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea.  The length of the project area is about 200 kilometers.  The project will produce 851 MCM of fresh water each year.  Two-thirds of which will be delivered to Jordan and one third to Israel and Palestinian Authority.

 

 

Project Status:

 

·        Pre-Feasibility Study is completed

·        Alternatives implementation approach were studied

·        Jordan and Israel agreed to proceed with full Feasibility Study

·        Donors Agencies contacted to provide financing for the Feasibility \study

 

 

Cost Estimate

 

The estimated cost for the Feasibility Study is $5million
