Aqaba Wastewater Project

Background

Aqaba City is located about 360 Km south of Amman with a population of 65,000 inhabitants. It is served by the wastewater facilities that consist of the following:

• Wastewater Treatment Plant Design capacity of 9,000 m3/day, Design BOD=50 g/l, and design. TSS= 50 mg/l. Total population served 30,000 people.

• Wastewater collections with approximate 200-Km length. Total number of registered house connections is 2,700.

Objectives

The objectives of the project are to expand the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant and to increase the efficiency of the wastewater collection and treatment to serve the area two phases, 2010 and 2025 respectively.

Project Description

The project includes the following components:

• Expanding the Wastewater Treatment Plant
• Main trunk lines and new collection network
• Reuse Program

Project Status

The EIA, detailed design, and preparation of tender documents started in June 1, 1999 and were financed by USAID. USAID has also provided a grant of JD8.750 million for implementation of the project.
Stage II (final design & tender documents) under way for signing the agreement (total construction cost is JD25.0 million. The JD25.0 million during the investment program period is to be financed by USAID and HKJ
