Background
The project covers an area of 90.5 km2, which includes the Municipalities
of Zarqa, Russeifa, Hashemeyeh, Sukhna and Shnellar Refugee Camp. The
problems encountered in this area can be listed as follows:
-
Insufficient water
resources
-
Old and deteriorated
water systems
-
High unaccounted-for
water
-
Inefficient
operating systems
-
Unplanned expansion
of the water system due to rapid and random expansion of the are
-
Inadequate
distribution system
-
Low water quality
Objectives
The aim of the project is to achieve the following:
-
Increase in water
use efficiency
-
Improvement of the
water supply system through the restructuring of the network
-
Introduction of new
zoning system
-
Separation of
distribution pipes from transmission pipes
-
Optimization of
pumping stations layout, including boosters and reservoirs
-
Introduction of
gravity supply to all areas
-
Introduction of
district metering to control UFW and bill collection
-
Rehabilitation of
the distribution systems
-
Reuse of wells with
low water quality
-
System expansion for
future use
-
Reduction of UFW
-
Improvement of
operation and maintenance procedures
-
Improvement of the
meter reading, billing and collection procedures
Project Description
The project will be implemented in two stages:
Stage I:
Target 2005; within
this stage it is planned to implement rehabilitation works, installation
of trunk mains with associated pumps and reservoirs, and rehabilitation of
pipe network.
Stage II:
Target 2015; within this stage it is planned to implement expansion of the
necessary facilities such as pumps, reservoirs and pipe networks.
Project Status
The study and the detailed design of Russeifa and Awajan has been
conducted by a team from Tokyo Engineering Consultants in Association with
Nippon Koei. The study was sponsored by JICA. the implementation of the
project has been started; the implementation of the trunk lines and the
reservoirs in Ruseifa area will be handed over to WAJ in March 2004. The
implementation of the trunk lines and reservoirs for Awajan area will be
started in March 2004. The JD 15 million during the investment program
period is financed by JICA.
Estimated Cost
The implementation of stage I of the project has been divided into two
phases, the cost for phase I was about JD 7 million and the cost for phase
2 is estimated to be JD 8 million with a total cost at JD 15 million.
The implementation of
stage II is estimated to be at a cost of JD 22 million.
