Background
The Irbid Governorate with a total population of almost 1 million is the
second biggest Governorate in Jordan. The population is expected to rise
to 2 million in the year 2025. It is home of three major universities and
in recent years many industrial estates have been established. Irbid
Governorate exports water (approximate quantity 3,500 m3/day to Jerash and
Ajloun Governorates.
One of the main problems in Irbid water administration is the shortage of
water resources which results in intermittent water supply and related
operational problems, therefore the highest priority currently is to tap
additional water resources for the rapidly developing Governorate. This
project consists of the construction of a major dam structure located on
the Jordanian-Syrian border on the Yarmouk River.
Objectives
Establishment of firm and stable water supply system to Irbid and the
neighbouring Governorates, namely Jerash and Ajloun Governorates.
Project Description
The project consist of the following three parts mainly:
1. Intake facilities: raw water will be taken from the out-let of Al-Wehda
dam.
2. Water treatment plant.
3. Transmission pipeline.
Project Status
The JD70.0 million during the investment program period is to be financed
by Japan.
